Director & Writer Statement

Jason Delane Lee

Family, Parenthood, Adoption, Identity. I chose to write and co-direct this short film- LIFELINE- because, after meeting my birth parents, losing my adoptive parents and becoming a husband & father myself, I was inspired to attempt to make sense of what all of those concepts mean. I have learned that in order to be aware of the present as it truly exists, we must grapple with and face our own insecurities hidden within our individual pasts. As an actor, I wanted to craft a lead character who is fearfully stuck. He cannot make a choice. I wanted to play that opposite. A lyric in Ben Harper’s song “Lifeline” states that “life is much too short to sit and wonder who is going to make the next move.” This song lyric deeply resonated within me in the creation of this short. Crafting this film - alongside my own immediate family- helped me understand what a lifeline is and how blessed we are to share in the love of those around us- adopted, biological or a chosen friend. I would like the audience to walk out of this film touched by the possibility of hope while facing an unknown future.
